Lüneburg

Lüneburg lies 50km south of Hamburg and is reached in 30 to 35 minutes by direct RE or IC train from Hamburg Hauptbahnhof, with several departures each hour; the IC is faster but costs more than the regional ticket, and a Deutschland-Ticket covers the RE service for travelers already holding one. The station sits a 10-minute walk from the Altstadt, so a morning arrival leaves the whole day free. Start at Am Sande, the wide market square lined with gabled brick merchant houses, then head down to the Wasserviertel harbor district on the Ilmenau river, where the old crane and half-timbered warehouses recall the town's history as a Hanseatic salt-trading center; the Deutsches Salzmuseum nearby explains how that trade built the town's wealth. A midday stop at one of the cafes on Am Sande or along Auf dem Meere suits a break before continuing to the Rathaus, one of the largest and most ornately decorated town halls in northern Germany, with guided interior tours running at set times. Afternoon is well spent on the short walk or taxi ride out to the edge of Lüneburg Heath, whose heather moorland turns purple in late August and September; a full walking tour of the heath itself is a separate excursion, but the town's edge gives a preview without requiring a full day. May through September brings warm weather for walking the harbor and heath approaches, while late August is the narrow window for the heather bloom. Rest stops cluster around Am Sande and the Wasserviertel, with bakeries and beer gardens near the water. An early-afternoon return train back to Hamburg avoids the evening commuter crowd.
