Lauenburg

Lauenburg/Elbe lies about 50km southeast of Hamburg, reached in roughly an hour via an RE train to Büchen followed by bus 8500 into the Lauenburg Altstadt, or in about 45 minutes by car via the A25 and B5. The bus drops close to the lower Altstadt, from which a short uphill walk leads into the cobbled old town of former shipping merchant houses stacked on the hillside above the Elbe. A late-morning arrival suits a walk through the Altstadt lanes to the Elbschifffahrtsmuseum, which covers the town's history as a river-shipping and towing center, before continuing up to the terrace above the Altstadt for river views over the Elbe. Midday is well spent at one of the small cafes in the lower town near the old harbor basin, where a handful of tugboats and barges still moor. The town itself is small, and its sights can be covered in two to three hours, making Lauenburg a good half-day trip or a stop paired with another Elbe-side town on the same rail corridor. April through October is the general season, with the upper terrace views best in clear afternoon light. Rest stops are limited outside the lower Altstadt, so a stop at the harbor cafes before or after the uphill walk is worth planning around. Because the connection depends on a bus at Büchen rather than a direct train, checking the bus 8500 timetable before departing Hamburg avoids a long wait at the Büchen interchange.
