Lübeck

Lübeck sits 66km northeast of Hamburg and is reached in about 45 minutes by direct RE train from Hamburg Hauptbahnhof, with departures roughly every half hour; travelers without a rail pass should buy a Deutschland-Ticket in advance if staying in the region multiple days, since a one-way ticket runs closer to a full-price regional fare. Trains arrive at Lübeck Hauptbahnhof, a 10-minute walk across the Puppenbrücke bridge to the Altstadt island, where the red-brick twin towers of the Holstentor gate mark the entrance to the UNESCO-listed old town. A morning arrival allows time to walk the gate's small museum before continuing into the Altstadt to see the Marienkirche's Gothic brick vaulting and the bells left shattered on the floor since a 1942 bombing raid, then browsing the Rathaus arcades on the Markt. Midday is well spent at Cafe Niederegger opposite the Rathaus, sampling the marzipan for which Lübeck has been known since the 18th century, or at one of the fish restaurants along An der Untertrave overlooking the Trave river. Afternoon suits a slower loop through the merchant courtyards (Gänge) off Glockengießerstraße and a visit to the Buddenbrookhaus, tied to the Mann family and Thomas Mann's novel set in the city. The Altstadt is compact and flat, walkable in a few hours without strain. April through October brings the mildest weather and longest museum hours; a weekday visit avoids the crowds that fill the Markt on summer weekends. Rest stops are plentiful along the harbor promenade, with benches and cafes clustered near the Holstentor and the Petrikirche tower, which has an elevator to a viewing platform over the rooftops. Travelers heading back to Hamburg in the early evening should aim to catch a train before 18:00 to avoid the after-work crush at Lübeck Hauptbahnhof.
