Bremen

Bremen lies 120km southwest of Hamburg and is reached in about 55 minutes by direct ICE train from Hamburg Hauptbahnhof, with services roughly every 30 minutes; the RE regional train takes longer but costs less and is covered by the Deutschland-Ticket. Bremen Hauptbahnhof is a 15-minute walk from the Marktplatz, so an early morning ICE leaves a full day in the city. The Marktplatz is the natural starting point, with the UNESCO-listed Rathaus and its Renaissance facade, the Roland statue standing guard as a symbol of civic rights, and the small bronze Bremen Town Musicians statue tucked beside the Rathaus, a stop for photos referencing the Brothers Grimm tale. From there, the Schnoor quarter's narrow medieval lanes are a short walk away, lined with small craft shops and cafes suited to a mid-morning coffee break. Midday is well spent along Böttcherstraße, a short Expressionist-era street connecting the Marktplatz to the Weser riverfront, with its brick reliefs and small museums. An afternoon riverside walk along the Schlachte promenade, lined with restaurants serving regional dishes like Bremer Knipp or fish specialties, rounds out the day before heading back to the station. April through October brings the mildest weather for walking between the Altstadt quarters; a weekday visit avoids the crowds that fill the Marktplatz on summer weekends and during the Freimarkt festival in October. Rest stops are frequent throughout the Altstadt, with benches and outdoor seating clustered around the Marktplatz and Schlachte. Returning to Hamburg by early evening avoids the tightest ICE bookings during peak commuter hours.
