Cuxhaven

Cuxhaven lies about 130km northwest of Hamburg at the mouth of the Elbe, reached in roughly 1h 40min by direct RE train (the Cuxhavener Bahn) from Hamburg Hauptbahnhof, with departures roughly every hour; driving via the A7/A27 takes about 1h 30min. The station is a short walk from the harbor area, so a mid-morning arrival still leaves time for a full afternoon outdoors. Start at the Alte Liebe viewing pier, a landmark spot for watching container ships and cruise liners pass the point where the Elbe meets the North Sea, then walk or take the local bus toward Duhnen, whose beach promenade is backed by dike-top paths popular for a midday walk. Lunch options cluster around the harbor and along the Duhnen promenade, with fish restaurants serving the regional Krabben (North Sea shrimp) catch. Afternoon is the time to walk out onto the tidal mudflats at low tide, either independently along marked paths or with a guided Wattwanderung group, since the Wadden Sea's exposed flats near Cuxhaven are part of the UNESCO-listed national park; checking the tide table before setting out is essential, as the flats submerge again as the tide turns. The Kugelbake landmark at the harbor mouth marks the traditional boundary between river and open sea and is a short walk from the Alte Liebe pier. May through September brings the mildest weather for the mudflats and beach promenade, and a low-tide midday arrival gives the best window for a mudflat walk. Rest stops are frequent along both the harbor and Duhnen promenade.
