Werbellinsee Forest Trail, Schorfheide-Chorin Biosphere Reserve

The Werbellinsee forest trail begins at Joachimsthal train station, on the eastern edge of the Schorfheide-Chorin UNESCO Biosphere Reserve, one of the largest unbroken forest areas in northeastern Germany. The route runs for about 11 km with roughly 70 m of elevation gain, rated Easy to Moderate (T1-T2), tracing sections of the Werbellinsee shoreline before turning inland through mixed pine and beech forest that has been left largely unmanaged within parts of the reserve, allowing for a denser, wilder woodland structure than is typical of managed Brandenburg forest. The reserve is known for its birds of prey, including breeding ospreys that fish over the lake in summer, along with cranes and other wetland species in the surrounding marshes. Shade is extensive through the forested sections, with open views across the water at several points along the shoreline. There are no mountain-style huts, but the village of Althüttendorf partway along the route has a kiosk, and Joachimsthal itself has cafes and shops for before or after the walk. Hikers wanting a shorter outing can turn back at the halfway point near Althüttendorf rather than completing the full loop back to the train station.
