Wolfsschlucht Trail, Märkische Schweiz

The Wolfsschlucht trail begins in the Kurpark of Buckow, a small spa town at the heart of the Märkische Schweiz Nature Park, an area whose surprisingly hilly, lake-dotted terrain earned it the nickname 'Brandenburg's Switzerland' from 19th-century visitors. The route covers about 9 km with roughly 130 m of elevation gain, rated Easy to Moderate (T1-T2), and its centrepiece is the Wolfsschlucht, a narrow forested ravine that the path descends via a series of wooden steps and switchbacks between steep, tree-covered slopes. Beyond the gorge, the trail opens onto the shoreline of the Schermützelsee, one of several small lakes threading through the park, before climbing back through mixed forest to several viewpoints overlooking the rolling hills that give the area its distinctive character within otherwise flat Brandenburg. The path is well shaded for most of its length and well signed, with benches at the main viewpoints; there are no mountain huts, but cafes in Buckow provide food and drink before or after the walk. Hikers who prefer a shorter outing can turn around after the Wolfsschlucht descent and lake shoreline section without completing the full loop back through the viewpoints. Buckow can be reached without a car via a regional bus connection from Strausberg, itself served by the Berlin S-Bahn, making the walk a realistic car-free day trip from the capital.
