Criewen Wetland Trail, Lower Oder Valley National Park

The Criewen wetland trail begins at the Nationalparkhaus, the visitor centre for the Nationalpark Unteres Odertal (Lower Oder Valley National Park), which sits directly on the German-Polish border in northeastern Brandenburg. The route covers about 7 km with almost no elevation gain, rated Easy (T1), following raised paths and dikes across the Oder river's floodplain, an internationally significant wetland habitat that floods seasonally to create one of Central Europe's most important stopover sites for migratory birds. The terrain is entirely flat and open, offering long, unobstructed views across wet meadows and reed beds with little natural shade, so sun protection is worth carrying in summer. Spring and autumn bring large flocks of cranes and geese to the floodplain, best observed from designated viewing platforms along the route, while the Nationalparkhaus itself has exhibits on the park's ecology and a small admission fee for its indoor displays, though the trail itself is free to walk. There are no huts along the route, but the visitor centre has toilets, water, and a small cafe area before setting out. Because water levels vary seasonally, some sections of path may be temporarily rerouted after heavy rain or spring flooding, and checking with the Nationalparkhaus before setting out is worthwhile. Hikers with less time can walk a shorter loop directly around the visitor centre's nearest viewing platforms rather than the full 7 km circuit.
