Étretat — Alabaster Coast Cliffs and Beach

Étretat's beach sits beneath the town's famous chalk cliffs on the Alabaster Coast in Normandy, about 230 kilometres from Paris. Unlike Deauville's sand, this beach is pebble — smooth, rounded stones that make swimming shoes a practical choice — and the water is clear but cool, typical of the Channel. The beach is a short, curved stretch enclosed between two dramatic cliff formations, the Falaise d'Amont and the Falaise d'Aval, the latter framing the natural rock arch and the needle-like Aiguille that make Étretat one of the most photographed coastlines in France. The setting is dramatic rather than sheltered: the cove is moderately exposed to wind, and the pebble slope can make entering the water a little more effortful than on a sandy beach. Beyond swimming, the main draw is the cliff-top walking paths, which climb from both ends of the beach and offer sweeping views back over the arch and the town; the paths are well marked but involve real elevation gain and can be exposed and slippery in wet or windy weather. The vibe is scenic and photography-driven, drawing walkers and day-trippers as much as swimmers, with restaurants and cafés clustered along the seafront promenade behind the beach. The nearby Jardins d'Étretat, a sculpted clifftop garden, adds another draw for visitors extending their stay. From Paris, the trip involves a train from Gare Saint-Lazare to Le Havre (about 2 hours, from roughly €16, or about $17), followed by a Keolis bus (route 24) to Étretat taking around 40 minutes for about €2.50. There is no rail station in Étretat itself, so the bus connection is necessary. Parking in town is limited in peak season, and the pebble beach has no permanent lifeguard amenities comparable to larger resort towns.
