Deauville — Côte Fleurie Beach

Deauville's beach lines the Côte Fleurie in Normandy, roughly 215 kilometres from Paris, and is best known for its wide stretch of fine golden sand running about 2 kilometres along the Channel coast. The beach is broad and open, backed by the wooden Promenade des Planches boardwalk lined with striped beach cabins named after film stars — a legacy of Deauville's annual American Film Festival. Being on the open Channel, the beach is moderately exposed to wind and can have a noticeable tidal range, so the usable sand width shifts considerably between low and high tide; swimmers should check tide times before heading out. The vibe is upscale and family-oriented by day, with a mix of families, older visitors and beachgoers strolling the boardwalk, shifting to a more sophisticated evening atmosphere around the town's casinos and restaurants. Amenities are well developed: numbered beach cabins can be rented, sun loungers are available, and the promenade is lined with cafés and restaurants; the beach itself has lifeguard supervision during the main summer season (roughly June to September). Deauville is also known for horse racing, with its famous Hippodrome hosting meets a short distance from the seafront. Access from Paris is straightforward by train: SNCF services run from Gare Saint-Lazare to Deauville-Trouville station in about 2 hours 10 minutes, from roughly €19 (about $21) one way, with the beach a 10-minute walk from the station. Parking is available in town for those driving, though it fills up on summer weekends. The combination of sandy beach, boardwalk, casinos and racing makes Deauville one of the most popular day-trip and weekend beach destinations from Paris.
