The Parc national des Calanques covers the limestone coastline south of Marseille, in the Provence-Alpes-Côte d'Azur region of France, and stretches towards Cassis. The calanques are narrow, steep-sided inlets cut into white cliffs, with turquoise water and small pebble coves at the end of each. The creeks closest to Marseille include Sormiou, Morgiou, Sugiton and Callelongue, and each is reached by a different trail or road. Walkers start from Luminy for Sugiton and Morgiou, while Callelongue is the southern end of the city's road and the usual starting point for coastal paths. Boat trips depart from the Vieux-Port and from nearby harbours, giving views of the cliffs from the water. Hiking is the main activity. Trails range from short descents of about an hour to a full day on the coastal routes between creeks, and many involve rough stony paths and steep sections. A half day is the minimum for most visits, and a full day is common. Swimming is possible at the coves, which have no facilities in most cases, so food and water must be carried. The park is a protected natural area open at all times, but the massif can be closed on high fire-risk days in summer, and visitors should check calanques-parcnational.fr before travelling. For 2026, Sugiton and Pierres Tombées require a free online reservation on peak dates, including 20 to 21 June, every day from 27 June to 30 August, and 5 to 6 and 12 to 13 September. Road access to Sormiou and Morgiou is restricted in summer. Bus 21 from Castellane runs to Luminy, the access point for several walks. Spring and autumn offer the most comfortable temperatures, and in summer an early start avoids the worst heat.
