Saint-Jean-de-Monts Beach

Saint-Jean-de-Monts beach runs for nearly 14 kilometres along the Vendee coast in Pays de la Loire, forming one of the longest uninterrupted stretches of Atlantic sand in France. The beach is wide and flat, composed of fine golden sand that bakes quickly in summer sun, and faces due west onto the open Atlantic, which means the surf is consistently lively — conditions that attract both beginner surfers and families who enjoy paddling in the shore break. The water ranges from a pale turquoise close to shore to a deeper blue further out; clarity is good between May and July before late-summer conditions occasionally affect the southern section. The resort town sits behind a broad promenade lined with cafes, creperies, and surf hire shops. Beach volleyball courts are marked out in July and August along the main supervised stretch, and the promenade connects directly to an extensive network of cycling paths threading through the dune system all the way to Saint-Hilaire-de-Riez to the north. Supervised swimming is available from July through August, with lifeguard posts positioned at intervals along the main resort frontage. Surf hire and bodyboard rentals are available from several outlets on the promenade. Camping is a dominant feature of the area — dozens of campsites fill the pinewood behind the dunes, attracting families who base themselves here for a week or more. This gives the beach a distinctly lively character in peak season, with young families and active holidaymakers creating a sociable atmosphere. Outside the school-holiday window the beach is far quieter, and the dune walks become genuinely peaceful. Access by car is via the D23 from Nantes (approximately 75 km, 1h15). A seasonal coastal bus links Saint-Jean-de-Monts with Saint-Gilles-Croix-de-Vie to the south. There is no direct train service — the nearest rail station is at Saint-Gilles-Croix-de-Vie.
