Saint-Gilles-Croix-de-Vie Beach

Saint-Gilles-Croix-de-Vie beach lies on the Vendee coast in Pays de la Loire, backed by the Avenue du Marechal Foch and directly facing the open Atlantic Ocean. The beach is broad and open, composed of fine grey-gold sand, and stretches for approximately two kilometres along the resort frontage. The westerly exposure means consistent surf — lively enough for surfing and bodyboarding while remaining manageable for confident swimmers during supervised hours in July and August. Water colour varies from a grey-green in choppy conditions to a clean blue-green in calm weather; clarity is typically good from May to early July. The town occupies the mouth of the Vie river where it meets the Atlantic, creating a distinctive dual identity: an active fishing harbour on one side and a beach resort on the other. The harbourside fish market operates on most mornings and offers some of the freshest sardines, sea bream, and mullet available on the Vendee coast — a draw in its own right. Kayak hire is available from the harbour and from seasonal stands near the beach. Several surf schools operate on the beach during summer, and lifeguard posts are positioned at intervals along the supervised zone. Restaurants and creperies line the promenade, ranging from simple snack bars to mid-range seafood establishments. A TER train from Nantes takes approximately 1h20 from EUR 10, making Saint-Gilles an accessible day-trip destination that retains a local working-port atmosphere rather than a purely tourist character. The beach attracts a mixed crowd: surfers on the main break, families in the supervised zone, and couples walking the flatter southern section near the river mouth. Parking along Avenue du Marechal Foch and in the car parks behind the promenade is plentiful outside peak August weeks.
