Les Sables-d'Olonne – Grande Plage

Les Sables-d'Olonne's Grande Plage is a wide, west-facing Atlantic beach stretching for approximately 2.5 kilometres along the seafront of this historic Vendee resort in Pays de la Loire. The sand is fine and pale gold, backed by a nineteenth-century casino and a broad promenade — Boulevard du Marechal de Lattre de Tassigny — lined with seafood restaurants, ice cream parlours, and surf schools. The beach faces the open Atlantic, so a moderate shore break is reliable through summer, and the surf is beginner-friendly rather than powerful. Water colour varies between a grey-green in choppy conditions and a clean blue-green in settled weather; clarity is best in late May and June before summer swell stirs up the sandy bottom. The town is internationally known as the starting and finishing point of the Vendee Globe, the solo non-stop round-the-world yacht race, and the harbour containing the race pontoons lies a short walk north of the beach. This maritime heritage gives Les Sables-d'Olonne a distinctly nautical character that extends onto the beach, where sailing and surf schools share the shorefront with traditional family sunbathing. Lifeguards supervise a designated swimming zone from July through August. Beach volleyball courts and a dedicated surf-school enclosure operate through the summer months. The broad, level promenade is suitable for pushchairs and mobility scooters. A beach casino on the waterfront provides evening entertainment, and the old town's pedestrian streets and covered market are within easy walking distance. TER trains connect Nantes to Les Sables-d'Olonne in approximately one hour from EUR 9, and the station is a 10-minute walk from the beach. Large car parks behind the promenade fill quickly in July and August, particularly on sunny weekends.
