A short, steep climb of 250 m to the ruins of the last Cathar stronghold.
Montségur is the last stronghold of the Cathars, a ruined castle on the Pog, a limestone peak at about 1,207 m in the Ariège Pyrenees foothills. The path from the village car park to the castle is short, about 1.2 km, but it climbs roughly 250 m over steep stone steps, so the ascent takes 30 to 45 minutes. At the top, the ruins and the views across the valley reward the effort.
The route is exposed to wind and sun, the stones can be slippery after rain, and the last section is steep. A fee is charged at the castle entrance, and the village has an archaeological museum. A loop through the surrounding forest can extend the walk to half a day.
From Toulouse, Montségur is about 100 km south-east and 1h45 by car; there is no convenient public transport, so most visitors drive via Pamiers and Lavelanet.
