An easy one-hour lakeshore walk on a mountain lake in the Ariège Pyrenees.
Lac de Bethmale is a natural lake at about 1,000 m in the Bethmale valley of the Ariège Pyrenees, around 120 km south-west of Toulouse. A lakeshore path and forest tracks make an easy walk of about one hour, with views of beech-covered slopes and, in autumn, strong colour. Longer mountain hikes start from the Bethmale valley for fitter walkers.
The lake has few services on the shore, so water and snacks should be carried. The water is cold and swimming is permitted only where signs allow.
There is no convenient public transport; visitors drive via Saint-Girons, about 2 hours from Toulouse, on mountain roads that can be icy in winter.
