A forest hike of 3 to 4 hours to the summit of the Montagne Noire.
The Pic de Nore is the highest summit of the Montagne Noire, at about 1,211 m, roughly 100 km east of Toulouse in the Aude department. Forest tracks and long-distance paths lead to the summit, where a transmitter stands and views stretch to the Pyrenees on clear days. A common route climbs from the Pradelles-Cabardès side on forest paths of 8 to 12 km, with 400 to 500 m of climbing, and takes 3 to 4 hours.
The mountain mixes beech, oak and conifer forest with open ridges. Weather can change quickly, and cold winds blow over the ridges even in summer. Hunting is practised in autumn and winter, so bright clothing is advisable. The Lac de Saint-Ferréol makes an easy add-on on the way back.
There is no useful public transport from Toulouse. Visitors drive via Revel or Carcassonne, about 1h30, and park at the trailhead.
