A short, mostly flat heritage walk between a pilgrim cathedral and a Romanesque church.
Saint-Bertrand-de-Comminges is a hilltop medieval village in the Haute-Garonne Pyrenees foothills, crowned by the Sainte-Marie cathedral. A short, mostly flat path of about 2 km links it to the Romanesque Saint-Just church at Valcabrère, passing remains of the Gallo-Roman town of Lugdunum Convenarum. Together the cathedral and Saint-Just form part of the Saint-Jacques-de-Compostelle pilgrim route listed by UNESCO.
The route is easy and suits a half-day, with views to the Pyrenees. Tickets are needed for the cathedral cloister and the archaeological sites, and fees and hours change by season. Parking is at the foot of the village, and the climb into the old town is steep.
The village is about 130 km south-west of Toulouse and takes around 1h40 by car via the A64. Public transport requires a train to Montréjeau-Gourdan-Polignan and a local connection, so most visitors drive.
