Discover the most beautiful beaches and coastal experiences in Occitanie.
Occitanie is a vast region in southern France stretching from the Atlantic Pyrenees to the Mediterranean coast, encompassing the historic cities of Toulouse, Montpellier, Carcassonne, and Nîmes. It blends medieval heritage, Roman ruins, UNESCO World Heritage sites, sandy beaches, and the soaring Pyrenees mountains into one of France's most diverse travel destinations. The region is also France's leading wine producer and home to world-famous culinary traditions including cassoulet and Roquefort cheese.
Top 10 Beaches
The best beaches Occitanie has to offer.
Plage de l'Espiguette
A vast expanse of wild, dune-backed white sand stretching over 10 km with no commercial development — just wind, waves, and the Atlantic-scale dune landscape of the Petite Camargue fringe. Flamingos are occasionally spotted in the lagoons behind the dunes. A genuinely spectacular beach for lovers of natural coastline.
Grande Plage de Sète
Sète's 12 km of sandy Mediterranean beach is one of the longest urban beaches in southern France, backed by the lively corniche boulevard with restaurants, ice cream stands, and changing facilities. The nearby port gives an authentic Sétois atmosphere quite different from purpose-built resorts.
Plage de Collioure
The sheltered pebble-and-sand coves beneath the Royal Castle and Fauve-painted harbourfront houses of Collioure are among the most photographed scenes on the French Mediterranean coast. The water is crystal clear and warm; the setting is extraordinary. Multiple small beaches (Boramar, Saint-Vincent, Port d'Avall) each have a distinct character.
Plage de Racou, Argelès-sur-Mer
Racou is the quieter, more characterful beach area of Argelès-sur-Mer, where a small community of beach chalets and fishermen's cottages lines the shore, giving it a nostalgic, authentic Catalan feel. The sea here at the foot of the Albères mountains is beautifully clear.
Plage de Leucate / La Franqui
The Leucate lagoon and coastal strip is world-renowned as one of Europe's premier kitesurfing and windsurfing destinations — the Tramontane wind here is strong and reliable. La Franqui is a beautiful wild beach at the northern end of the Leucate peninsula with crystalline water and a wild, breezy atmosphere.
Grande Plage de Carnon
Carnon is Montpellier's nearest proper beach resort, easily accessible by tram and bus, with a long sandy beach, marina, and a solid range of beach restaurants and water sports activities. It gets very busy in July–August but is excellent in June and September.
Plage de Palavas-les-Flots
Palavas is a classic, charming French seaside resort with a canal dividing the town and two sandy beach sections. It has been the traditional seaside escape for Montpellier residents for over a century, with a lighthouse, fresh fish restaurants along the canal, and a pleasant nostalgic atmosphere.
Plage du Barcarès
Le Barcarès is a large planned beach resort on the Roussillon coast between the Étang de Salses-Leucate and the Mediterranean, with 14 km of sandy beach, extensive watersports facilities, and a lively summer atmosphere. The famous beached ship 'Lydia' (built 1931) serves as a beach club landmark.
Plage de Port-la-Nouvelle
Port-la-Nouvelle is an industrial port town on the Aude coast but its long sandy beach is excellent and far less crowded than better-known Hérault and Pyrénées-Orientales resorts. The town has good local restaurants and a laid-back working-port character that gives it a more authentic feel.
Plage de la Côte Vermeille near Banyuls
Banyuls-sur-Mer is at the heart of the first French marine nature reserve, with exceptional underwater visibility and rich marine life — corals, sea bass, and octopus. The beaches here are small and rocky rather than sandy, but the snorkelling and diving are outstanding. Banyuls is also the home of the famous Banyuls fortified wine.
