Plage du Barcarès

Plage du Barcarès extends along approximately 14 kilometres of sandy Mediterranean shoreline at Le Barcarès in the Pyrénées-Orientales department of Occitanie, making it one of the longest resort beaches in southern France. The resort was created as part of the Mission Racine planned coastal development programme of the 1960s and 1970s, designed to provide large-scale, accessible seaside tourism on the Roussillon coast. The beach runs between the open Mediterranean and the vast Étang de Salses-Leucate lagoon behind it, and the resort is comprehensively equipped with watersports facilities, beach bars, and a range of accommodation. The sand at Le Barcarès is pale and fairly fine, the beach wide, with a gradual entry into the Mediterranean that makes it generally safe for swimming across the summer season. The resort is particularly well configured for sailing, windsurfing, and kitesurfing. The Étang de Salses-Leucate — one of the largest lagoons in France — provides protected, shallow water for beginners and improvers, while the open Mediterranean shore offers more demanding conditions for experienced practitioners. The most distinctive landmark is the SS Lydia, a 1931 ocean-going vessel that was deliberately run aground on the beach in 1967 and has since operated as a beach bar, club, and event venue. The Lydia remains active in summer with bar service, music events, and a roof terrace, and is one of the genuine curiosities of the Roussillon coast. Le Barcarès also hosts the annual Electrobeach Festival in July, one of France's largest electronic music events, which takes place directly on the beach and draws tens of thousands of visitors. Sun lounger and parasol rental is widespread along the central beach at around €15–€20 per set per day. Lifeguards cover multiple sectors from mid-June through September. Beach volleyball courts, a watersports school, and children's activity clubs operate throughout summer. The town economy functions almost entirely in the summer season.
