Calvados Distillery Tour (Domaine Dupont, Pays d'Auge)

  • Duration2 hours
  • Price€10–€20 per person

Domaine Dupont is one of the Pays d'Auge's most historically significant calvados and cider estates, founded in the nineteenth century and located in Victot-Pontfol, a rural commune 25 kilometres east of Caen in the Calvados department of Normandy. The property has been in the same family for five generations, and the estate's half-timbered farmhouse courtyard, copper alembic stills, and oak-barrel aging cellars are among the most visited on the Route du Cidre.

Guided tours of approximately two hours take visitors through the full production process, beginning in the orchards where more than forty heritage apple varieties are grown — including Bisquet, Noël des Champs, and Fréquin Rouge — then moving through the pressing house, fermentation vats, and into the distillery. The copper pot still used for the double-distillation method required for Pays d'Auge AOC calvados has been in operation for decades. The guide explains how the first distillation is separated from the second pass (la bonne chauffe) to produce the raw spirit at approximately 70% ABV before it enters the oak barrels.

The barrel cellar holds calvados in various stages of ageing from two years to beyond twenty. The guide draws small samples from barrels of different ages to illustrate the evolution of the spirit from sharp young apple eau-de-vie through to the vanilla and spice notes that develop in long-aged reserves. The formal tasting session covers the principal age expressions in the Dupont range: Fine (2–3 years), Vieux (over 3 years), Réserve (over 6 years), Hors d'Âge (over 10 years), and limited XO cuvées when in stock.

Tours run April through October, Monday to Saturday, 10:00–18:00. Advance booking through the domaine website is strongly recommended as group size is limited to allow meaningful access to the cellar. The domaine shop sells the full range at producer prices, typically 20–35% below retail. International shipping is available on request.

Tips for visiting

  • Book through domaine-dupont.com at least one week in advance during peak season (July–August) as tour places sell quickly.
  • Designate a non-drinking driver before arrival — tastings include spirits as well as cider and are generous.
  • The estate is not served by public transport; arrive by car via the D49 from the direction of Cambremer.
  • Purchasing calvados at the domaine shop is worthwhile as producer prices are significantly lower than in supermarkets and the full range is available.
  • Combine the visit with the Route du Cidre circuit to take in three or four other producers in the same day.
