Deauville Beach (Plage de Deauville)
The most glamorous beach in Normandy, lined with the iconic wooden plank promenade (Les Planches) and coloured parasols. The boardwalk cabins carry the names of famous actors who attended the American Film Festival. Excellent soft sand, gentle waves, and all facilities. The epitome of chic Norman seaside.
Trouville Beach
Across the Touques river from Deauville, Trouville is more authentic and affordable. The Belle Époque seafront casino-hôtel backdrop, excellent fish market, and lively quayside make it a favourite. The beach is excellent with softer sand than most Norman coasts.
Étretat Beach
A small pebble beach framed by the famous chalk cliffs and rock arches. Not ideal for sunbathing or swimming (strong currents and pebbles) but extraordinarily beautiful. The main reason to visit is the clifftop walks above. The beach at low tide reveals interesting rock pools.
Omaha Beach
The most famous D-Day beach — a wide, gently sloping sand beach where 2,000 American soldiers fell on 6 June 1944. Today it is a peaceful, vast sand beach with dunes. Walking the beach at dawn, imagining the events of June 6, is one of the most profound experiences Normandy offers. The Normandy American Cemetery overlooks from the bluff.
Utah Beach
The westernmost D-Day beach, where US 4th Infantry Division landed with the fewest casualties. A long, dune-backed beach on the remote Cotentin coast. The Utah Beach Museum sits directly on the sand. The beach is wide, uncrowded, and backed by dunes — an evocative and peaceful setting.
Gold Beach (Arromanches)
The site of the British D-Day landing and the extraordinary prefabricated Mulberry harbour. Concrete caissons from the 1944 artificial harbour remain visible offshore at low tide — a remarkable sight 80 years on. The beach curves attractively in front of the small resort town.
Sword Beach (Ouistreham)
The easternmost D-Day beach, where British and Free French forces landed. Today Ouistreham is an active resort with a casino and beach facilities. The beach is wide and sandy, and the Mémorial Pegasus (inland) is nearby. Ferries to Portsmouth depart from Ouistreham harbour.
Juno Beach (Courseulles-sur-Mer)
Where 14,000 Canadian soldiers landed on D-Day. Today a sand beach in front of the small resort of Courseulles-sur-Mer, known for its oyster farms. The Juno Beach Centre commemorates the Canadian contribution. Concrete anti-tank obstacles (obstacles Rommel) are still visible at low tide.
Dieppe Beach
Dieppe's beach is a long shingle crescent backed by the dramatic castle on its chalk headland. The town was the site of the disastrous 1942 Dieppe Raid. The pebble beach is broad and popular with local families. The town centre and excellent Saturday market are within easy walking distance.
Veules-les-Roses Beach
