Best Day Trips from Normandy 2025

Discover the best day trip destinations and excursions from Normandy.

Normandy is a historic region in northern France, renowned for its dramatic coastline, medieval architecture, and pivotal role in the D-Day landings of World War II. From the iconic Mont-Saint-Michel abbey to the solemn beaches of the Allied invasion, the region blends natural beauty with profound historical significance. Rolling green countryside, apple orchards, and charming market towns complete the picture of this quintessentially French destination.

Top 10 Day Trips

The best excursions from Normandy.

1

Paris

⏱️ 1h15 by train; 1h30 by car (A13)

Paris is the obvious day trip from eastern Normandy. From Rouen, SNCF trains depart hourly for Paris-Saint-Lazare (1h15). A day in Paris allows the Eiffel Tower, Louvre, Musée d'Orsay (Impressionist paintings — the Normandy connection is strong here), Notre-Dame Cathedral, and the Marais. Return to Rouen by 21:00 on the last direct evening train.

Highlights: Musée d'Orsay (Monet's Normandy series), Notre-Dame Cathedral (now largely restored), Marais neighbourhood, Eiffel Tower
2

Mont-Saint-Michel from Caen

⏱️ 1h30 by car; no direct train

Mont-Saint-Michel is technically accessible from Caen as a long day trip (2h each way without stops). Drive the A84 motorway south to Avranches, then follow the D976 to the island. Alternatively, guided bus tours depart from Caen and Bayeux. On the island, explore the medieval streets, abbey, and bay views. Allow 3–4 hours at the island.

Highlights: Mont-Saint-Michel abbey (€13), Bay crossing walk with a guide, Medieval village streets, Views from the abbey ramparts, Salt marsh lamb at La Mère Poulard
3

Saint-Malo and Brittany Coast

⏱️ 50 min by car from Granville; 45 min from Mont-Saint-Michel

Saint-Malo, the walled corsair city on the Brittany coast, is within easy reach of southern Normandy. The Intra-Muros (walled city) with its granite ramparts, excellent seafood restaurants, and views to the Channel Islands is one of the finest small cities in northern France. Combine with a visit to the oyster beds of Cancale (15km east) for a plateau de fruits de mer lunch.

Highlights: Saint-Malo Intra-Muros ramparts walk, Cancale oyster harbour (15km from Saint-Malo), Grand Aquarium Saint-Malo (kids), Fort National at low tide, Dinner in Saint-Malo old town
4

Chartres Cathedral

⏱️ 1h30 by car from Rouen; 2h30 by train (change Paris)

Chartres Cathedral is considered the finest example of French High Gothic architecture and a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Its original medieval stained glass windows (the largest surviving collection in the world) are extraordinary. The city of Chartres is charming with a medieval quarter along the Eure river. Guided tours of the cathedral windows by Malcolm Miller (the legendary English guide) run April–November.

Highlights: Chartres Cathedral stained glass windows (12th–13th century), Medieval Chartres lower town and Eure river, Musée des Beaux-Arts de Chartres, Malcolm Miller guided tours (Tue–Sat)
5

Channel Islands Day Cruise (Jersey/Guernsey)

⏱️ 1h (Granville–Jersey); 1h30 (Cherbourg–Guernsey)

The British Crown Dependencies of Jersey and Guernsey are within easy reach of the Normandy coast. Condor Ferries runs fast ferry services from Granville (to Jersey, seasonal) and Cherbourg (to Guernsey and Jersey). A day on Jersey allows: Jersey Zoo (Durrell Wildlife), Saint Helier town, and the D-Day German Underground Hospital.

Highlights: Jersey Zoo (Durrell Wildlife Conservation Trust), Saint Helier town and market, Jersey German Underground Hospital, Guernsey Victor Hugo's house (Hauteville House), Duty-free shopping
6

D-Day Beaches Circuit from Caen

⏱️ Full day by car

The full D-Day beach circuit from Caen takes in the five landing beaches (Omaha, Utah, Gold, Juno, Sword), Pointe du Hoc, Arromanches, and the American Cemetery. A self-guided car circuit starting at the Mémorial de Caen covers the highlights in a full day. Better to spend 2 days to do it justice. The Mémorial de Caen is the best single introduction before visiting the beaches themselves.

Highlights: Mémorial de Caen (start here), Pointe du Hoc (Rangers memorial), Omaha Beach and American Cemetery, Arromanches Mulberry harbour remains, Juno Beach Centre (Canadian)
7

Loire Valley from Alençon

⏱️ 1h45 by car (A28/A85)

The Loire Valley (UNESCO World Heritage) with its extraordinary Renaissance châteaux (Chambord, Chenonceau, Azay-le-Rideau) is accessible from southern Normandy for an ambitious day trip. From Alençon, the drive takes 1h45 to the Château de Chambord. A round trip is very long — better planned as an overnight from Alençon.

Highlights: Château de Chambord (François I's hunting lodge), Château de Chenonceau (spanning the Cher river), Loire Valley wines (Vouvray, Sancerre)
8

Giverny and Vernon from Rouen

⏱️ 1h by car (D982); train to Vernon then 5km taxi/bus

Monet's house and gardens at Giverny are a half-day excursion from Rouen. Drive or take the train to Vernon (on the Paris–Rouen line), then a short taxi or shuttle bus to Giverny. The water garden with its Japanese bridge and lily pond, which inspired the Nymphéas series, is extraordinary in May–June. Combine with the Château des Bizy at Vernon (beautiful formal gardens).

Highlights: Monet's Water Garden (lily pond and Japanese bridge), Clos Normand flower garden, Monet's pink house and studio, Château de Bizy at Vernon (optional)
