Saül Jungle Village (Overnight/Multi-day)

Saül is a remote village of approximately 200 permanent residents deep within the primary rainforest of southern French Guiana, reachable only by light aircraft from the domestic terminal at Rochambeau International Airport in Cayenne. Air Guyane and Fly Guyane operate the route, crossing from the coastal plain over unbroken Amazonian canopy to a small jungle airstrip in approximately 45 minutes. With no road connecting Saül to French Guiana's highway network, the village maintains a degree of isolation that makes it one of the most pristine ecotourism destinations in the entire Guiana Shield. Saül sits at approximately 220 metres elevation in the foothills of the Guiana Highlands and serves as the primary accessible trailhead for the Parc Amazonien de Guyane — the largest national park in France and the European Union, protecting 3.4 million hectares of southern French Guiana's interior. The park's trail network around Saül is the most developed and visitor-accessible entry point into this vast protected wilderness. Hiking trails of varying lengths radiate from the village: the Sentier du Layon offers a gentle three-to-four-hour circuit through primary forest with excellent birdwatching, while the Sentier du Mont Galbao ascends to panoramic ridge views requiring a full day and moderate fitness. A minimum one-night stay is required as there are no same-day return flights. Most visitors plan two to four nights to make proper use of the trail network and the wildlife-rich surroundings. Accommodation is provided by several small family-run guesthouses (gites) in the village, offering simple but comfortable rooms and home-cooked Creole meals for approximately 30 to 60 euros per person per night including board. The village has no ATM — visitors must bring all required euros in cash for the full duration of the stay. Baggage limits on light aircraft are strict, typically 10 to 15 kilograms per passenger, making careful packing essential. Birdwatching at Saül is exceptional: harpy eagles, scarlet macaws, the Guiana cock-of-the-rock, and numerous antbird and tanager species have been recorded near the village trails. Local guides available through the village tourist service lead half-day and full-day excursions, significantly enhancing wildlife encounter rates and ensuring safe navigation in the dense forest.
