Place des Palmistes

Place des Palmistes is the central public square of Cayenne, the capital of French Guiana, and functions as the social heart of the city. The square takes its name from the rows of royal palm trees (Roystonea oleracea) that line its perimeter and central promenade, creating a canopy-shaded corridor popular with strollers, joggers, and families at all hours. Flanking the square are several of Cayenne's most recognisable historic buildings: the colonial-era Hôtel de Ville (town hall), the prefecture, and a cluster of timber Creole houses dating from the 19th century. Café terraces occupy the edges of the square; the most traditional establishments serve Creole breakfasts of pain au chocolat and pineapple juice alongside Antillais coffee. At the northern end, a small gazebo hosts occasional live music events, particularly on weekday evenings and during Carnival season in January and February. The square is the main staging point for Cayenne's Carnival processions, which are among the most elaborate in the French Caribbean — the weeks leading up to Mardi Gras see costumed bands, drum parades, and late-night revelry filling the adjacent streets. Outside Carnival, the square provides a quiet counterpoint to the market streets nearby; schoolchildren gather under the palms at lunch, and elderly residents play dominoes in the shade. The square covers approximately 2 hectares and functions both as a transit point between the central market and the waterfront and as a destination in its own right.
