Marché Central de Cayenne

Marché Central de Cayenne is the main covered market in the capital of French Guiana and one of the most characterful food markets in the French Caribbean. Occupying a large covered hall near the Place du Marché in central Cayenne on Rue Lallouette, the market operates three mornings per week — Wednesday, Friday, and Saturday — with Saturday drawing the widest range of vendors and the greatest diversity of produce. The stalls overflow with Amazonian fruits unfamiliar to most European visitors: maracuja passion fruit, carambola star fruit, corossol (soursop), achachairu, and seasonal rarities foraged from the forest interior. Alongside the produce, vendors sell dried spices, local rum preparations, hot sauces, and fresh fish hauled from the Cayenne waterfront. A separate area beyond the food section houses clothing, household goods, and craft stalls. Creole, Brazilian, Surinamese, and Hmong vendors work adjacent stalls, giving the market a genuinely multicultural character that reflects French Guiana's diverse demographic composition. Street food is available from the surrounding lanes and inside the hall: accras de morue (salt-cod fritters), bouillon d'awara (a rich Creole palm fruit stew available only during Lent), and various grilled meats. The atmosphere peaks between 07:00 and 09:00 on Saturdays when the hall is full and cool before the tropical heat builds.
