White-Water Rafting — Golo River

The Golo River is Corsica's longest river, rising on the flanks of Monte Cinto (2,706 m) and flowing approximately 90 km northeast to the Tyrrhenian Sea near Aléria. The most exhilarating section for white-water rafting runs through the deep gorges between Ponte Leccia and Francardo in Haute-Corse, approximately 12 km north of Corte, where spring snowmelt sustains Grade III–IV rapids from April through early July. Guided rafting trips are operated by Corsica Aventure in Corte (+33 4 95 46 06 13). Half-day sessions cover a 12 km section from the Ponte Leccia put-in, descending through the Golo gorge beneath chestnut and oak-covered canyon walls before taking out near Francardo. Groups of 4–8 people share a self-bailing raft led by a qualified guide who directs paddling technique and line selection through each rapid. All safety equipment — wetsuit, helmet, and personal flotation device — is provided. Participants must be able to swim; minimum age is typically 12–14 years, varying with water level on the day. The guide delivers a comprehensive safety briefing covering paddle commands, body position in the raft, and self-rescue technique before launch. Water temperatures are cool in spring — approximately 10–14°C in April — and reach a more comfortable 18–22°C from June onwards. The optimal rafting window is April through early July. April and May snowmelt from Monte Cinto produces the most powerful Grade III–IV flows, when the gorge is at its most dramatic and technically demanding. June offers slightly lower but still excellent Grade III conditions with warmer water. By August, flows typically drop to Grade I–II and the trip loses much of its technical character. Operators monitor levels and may run grade-adjusted trips in late season. The Corte area makes an excellent base; the town is 12 km from the Ponte Leccia put-in and offers good accommodation, dining, and access to complementary activities including canyoning on the nearby Tavignano river.

Tips for visiting

  • Book for April or May for the highest water levels and most challenging Grade III–IV conditions
  • Water temperatures in April can reach as low as 10°C — the provided wetsuit is essential; a thermal base layer underneath adds warmth
  • Secure personal items in the dry bag provided by the guide; phones and cameras are vulnerable inside the raft
  • Arrive having eaten a light meal 1–2 hours before the session; paddling on a very full stomach is uncomfortable
  • Corsica Aventure also offers canyoning on the nearby Tavignano river — combining both over two days at Corte is highly efficient
