Kitesurfing — Calvi Bay

Calvi Bay, on the northwest coast of Haute-Corse, is one of Corsica's premier kitesurfing venues, combining a wide arc of sandy beach, reliable seasonal winds, and facilities suitable for beginners through to intermediate riders. The bay faces northwest and is exposed to the Maestrale and Libecciu winds that dominate the coast from May through September, delivering consistent force 3–6 conditions ideal for learning and progression. Surf Center Calvi, located directly on the Plage de Calvi a five-minute walk from the town centre, is the main kitesurfing school and rental operation. The centre is affiliated with the International Kiteboarding Organization (IKO) and teaches using the IKO-certified curriculum. Beginner group lessons are structured in three-hour blocks covering safety, wind theory, body dragging, and water starts; private lessons offer faster progression and more flexible scheduling. Complete equipment — kite, control bar, harness, board, and wetsuit — is provided for all lessons and rental sessions. Rental by the hour or day is available for riders who can demonstrate sufficient kite control; a brief skills check may be required before unsupervised hire. Participants must be comfortable in the water and able to swim at least 50 metres; minimum age is typically 12 years. The Libecciu northwest wind is most reliable from May through September, typically building in late morning and peaking in the afternoon. The best period for beginners is May–June and September, when winds are steadier and the beach is less crowded than in July and August. Summer conditions can produce gusty thermal winds that are less suitable for novice riders. The Plage de Calvi offers a long open beach with a gradual sandy bottom, providing a safe learning environment. Experienced riders can access the bay's outer sections for longer downwind runs.
