Canoe Trip — Loir River through Troglodyte Villages

The Loir River — a tributary of the Sarthe and distinct from the larger Loire — winds through some of the most unusual village scenery in Centre-Val de Loire. Between Montoire-sur-le-Loir and Lavardin in the northern Loir-et-Cher, the river passes directly beneath cliffs of soft tuffeau limestone that have been hollowed out over centuries into troglodyte dwellings, wine caves, and chapels that define this stretch of valley. Canoeing this 8-kilometre section offers a perspective on the cliff faces and the medieval Château de Lavardin — classified among France's most beautiful ruins — that is impossible to obtain from the roads above. Base Canoe du Loir, operating from the quayside at Lavardin, hires two-person canoes and single kayaks for the downstream section between Montoire and Lavardin. The river current is gentle, the width averages 20–30 metres, and there are no rapids or technical obstacles; the route suits families with children aged five and over, beginners, and anyone who prefers a relaxed float. Life jackets are provided and mandatory; a shuttle return from Lavardin to Montoire is included in the hire price. The scenery along the paddle includes the painted troglodyte chapel of Saint-Gilles at Lavardin visible from the water, rows of cave cellars used for mushroom cultivation and wine storage, willows trailing into the current, and — in late spring — dense flowering banks of yellow irises. Wildlife is abundant: kingfishers nest in the sandy banks, great crested grebes can be seen on the open stretches, and common sandpipers work the shallows. Hire costs €20–€30 per canoe for a session of 2.5–4 hours. The paddle is available from May through September, with June through August offering the warmest conditions. Paddlers should secure valuables in a waterproof bag and apply sunscreen before departure; the open water sections provide little shade. The Lavardin base also provides picnic areas and basic refreshments.
