Kayak or Canoe on the Cher River (Chenonceaux)

Paddling the Cher River past the Château de Chenonceau is one of the most photographed water-based experiences in Centre-Val de Loire, offering a water-level view of the 16th-century château's arched gallery bridge that no road or footpath can match. Kayak de Chenonceaux, based at La Roberdière in Civray-de-Touraine (Indre-et-Loire), hires single and double kayaks and open canoes by the hour or for multi-hour self-guided excursions between April and September. The main paddle route follows 4 to 8 kilometres of the Cher, with the château appearing around a gentle bend roughly 30 minutes into the downstream section. The current is mild and the river banks are free of major hazards, making this one of the most accessible river paddles in the region. No prior paddling experience is required; staff provide a short safety briefing and basic paddle technique instruction before departure. Children aged five and over can join in double kayaks or canoes with an adult. Life jackets are provided and must be worn throughout. The Cher at this point flows through flat, reed-fringed floodplain, with poplars and willows shading the banks. In addition to the château, paddlers pass the remains of a medieval weir system and the gardens of the Domaine de Chenonceau on the north bank. The route is almost entirely free of road noise and well suited to wildlife spotters — grey herons, kingfishers, and cormorants are regularly seen. Equipment provided includes the kayak or canoe, paddle, and buoyancy aid. Paddlers are advised to bring a dry bag for phones and cameras, sunscreen, and secure footwear that can get wet. Sessions run from April through September, with May through August offering the warmest water temperatures. Water levels can occasionally be lower in August, shortening the navigable stretch slightly. Hiring a double kayak costs €12–€18 per person for a two-hour session. The hire base can arrange shuttle returns for one-way downstream paddles on request.
