Full-Day Cycling — Loire à Vélo (Tours to Amboise segment)

The Loire à Vélo cycling route is a 900-kilometre signposted greenway tracking the Loire River from Cuffy in the Cher département to Saint-Brévin-les-Pins on the Atlantic coast. The Tours-to-Amboise segment, covering roughly 25 kilometres of dedicated tarmac and traffic-free riverside path through the heart of Indre-et-Loire, is widely regarded as the most château-dense stretch of the entire route and makes an ideal full-day excursion from either city. Detours de Loire, headquartered at 35 rue Charles Gilles in Tours, is the principal bike-hire operator for this segment and runs multiple depots along the route. Standard road bikes and touring hybrids rent for €12–€22 per day; electric bikes are available for €25–€40 and are recommended for those who prefer a relaxed pace or want to spend more time at château stops than pedalling. Helmets are included with all rentals, and a GPS route card or QR-code map is provided at pick-up. The route eastward from Tours follows the south bank of the Loire through the communes of Vouvray — celebrated for its tuffeau-cave cellars and sparkling Vouvray AOC — before crossing the river near Amboise and reaching the medieval Château Royal d'Amboise and the Clos Lucé manor where Leonardo da Vinci spent his final years. Side detours of 3–5 km access the Château de Chaumont-sur-Loire. The terrain is almost entirely flat, with a maximum climb of under 30 metres. Children from age 7 can ride on a tag-along attachment; cargo bikes for families are available on request. The route is best ridden between April and October. Spring offers light crowds and wildflower verges; early autumn brings harvest activity in the Vouvray vineyards. Mid-July through August is busy; starting before 09:00 avoids afternoon heat and touring-group congestion. Riders should carry at least two litres of water; refill points are available in Vouvray, Amboise, and smaller villages along the way.
