Titou Gorge

1-2 hours Adult: $10 (includes life jacket rental) · Child: $5

A dramatic narrow gorge where you can swim through a canyon with 20-foot walls to reach a hidden waterfall. Made famous in Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man's Chest, this adventurous swim requires navigating through cool spring water in near-darkness before emerging at a magnificent cascade.

Titou Gorge is one of Dominica's most thrilling natural attractions — a narrow volcanic gorge carved through basalt rock near the village of Laudat in Saint George Parish, where visitors swim through a dark, close-walled canyon to reach a hidden waterfall. The experience begins at a small facility where life jackets and lockers are available. Swimmers enter a pool of cool, spring-fed water at the gorge entrance and navigate approximately 50 metres upstream through a passage no more than 2 to 3 metres wide, with sheer rock walls rising 6 metres on either side. The walls narrow further in places, requiring visitors to turn sideways and use handholds carved into the rock. The gorge interior is dramatically dark, lit only by the narrow strip of sky above and occasional filtered light on the water surface. At the far end, the gorge opens into a small chamber where a cascade falls into a pool — the secret waterfall that rewards those who complete the swim. The force of the inflow from the waterfall creates a current that makes the final section of the swim more strenuous. The name 'Titou' translates as 'little throat' in the local Antillean Creole dialect — an apt description of the narrow passage. The gorge achieved wider fame as a filming location for 'Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man's Chest' (2006). The facility at Laudat charges approximately USD 5 to 10 per person; life jackets are provided and recommended for all swimmers. The water is cold (around 20°C) by Caribbean standards and the swim requires moderate ability — visitors who are not confident swimmers should not attempt the gorge section. The gorge is conveniently combined with a visit to Trafalgar Falls, located 10 minutes away by road.
