Middleham Falls

3-4 hours round trip Adult: $5 · Child: $2

Dominica's tallest single-drop waterfall at 200 feet, cascading into a large pool perfect for swimming. The moderate 45-minute hike through pristine rainforest passes giant ferns, strangler figs, and colorful birds, offering one of the island's most rewarding waterfall experiences.

Middleham Falls is Dominica's tallest single-drop waterfall, plunging approximately 60 metres (200 feet) down a basalt cliff face deep within Morne Trois Pitons National Park, near the village of Laudat in Saint Paul Parish. The hike to the falls is one of the most rewarding on the island — a moderately challenging 45-minute trail each way through pristine primary rainforest that sees far fewer visitors than nearby Trafalgar Falls, offering a more solitary jungle experience. The trailhead is accessible from Cochrane village, where a rough road leads to a small car park. The path descends steadily through mature rainforest characterised by enormous strangler fig trees, 6-metre tree ferns, and dense undergrowth of wild ginger, bromeliad, and heliconia. The trail crosses a small river twice before climbing briefly to emerge at the base of the falls. At the bottom, a large natural plunge pool approximately 3 metres deep provides excellent swimming in cool, clear water. The spray from the falls reaches several metres outward, and the surrounding cliff walls are carpeted in moss and ferns, creating a natural amphitheatre of green. The pool is deep enough for jumping from lower rocks along the edge. The trail can become very slippery in wet weather, and sections involve exposed tree roots and stream crossings on stepping stones. Water shoes or hiking boots with good grip are essential. The park fee of USD 5 (adults) / USD 2 (children) applies. The trail is open from dawn to dusk and no guide is required, though local guides from Laudat and Cochrane offer services for USD 20 to 30 per group. Total round-trip time including swimming is approximately 3 to 4 hours.
