Trafalgar Falls Twin Waterfalls

Iconic shot of Papa and Mama Falls side-by-side cascading through lush greenery. Platform viewpoint offers perfect framing. Best photos from the closer approach to Papa Falls.

The twin waterfalls at Trafalgar are Dominica's most photographed natural landmark — Papa Falls (approximately 38 metres) and Mama Falls (approximately 23 metres) cascade simultaneously down adjacent cliff faces within Morne Trois Pitons National Park, framed by lush tropical vegetation and separated by a narrow ridge of dark volcanic rock. The classic composition captures both falls side by side from the main viewing platform, positioned at the end of the short path from the park entrance. From this platform, both cascades are visible in a single frame: Papa Falls descends the taller face on the left, its spray catching light in the midday sun; Mama Falls drops on the right with a slightly narrower curtain of water. The two falls converge into the same boulder-strewn ravine below. For photographers, the primary challenge is the contrast between the bright white water of the falls and the deep shadows of the surrounding forest. Morning light (between 9 and 11 AM) is the most balanced, providing soft diffused illumination on the falls from the eastern hillside above. Midday harsh overhead sunlight creates blown highlights on the water. A second shooting position is available by scrambling across the boulders toward the base of Papa Falls, which allows a tighter composition with the cascade filling more of the frame and the hot spring pool in the foreground. A wide-angle lens (16–24 mm equivalent) is recommended for the platform shot; a telephoto (70–200 mm) for isolating details of the water texture on Papa Falls. Park entrance fee of USD 5 (adults) applies.

  • Twin waterfalls visible simultaneously from the viewing platform — Dominica's most iconic single-frame composition
  • Papa Falls (38 m) and Mama Falls (23 m) separated by volcanic rock, converging in the ravine below
  • Hot spring pool at the base of Papa Falls — warm water creates foreground interest for photography
  • Morning light (9–11 AM) provides the most balanced illumination for both falls without harsh shadows
  • Both wide-angle platform view and tighter boulder-approach compositions available from a single visit

Tips

  • Arrive before 9 AM for the best light on the falls and to avoid cruise ship groups
  • A polarising filter reduces glare on the falling water and deepens the green of the surrounding vegetation
  • Shoot from the viewing platform first, then scramble to the boulder base for a different angle on Papa Falls
  • Overcast skies are excellent for waterfall photography — even exposure across falls and forest
  • Bring water shoes if planning to reach the base — the boulder approach is slippery

FAQ

What time gives the best light for photographing the twin falls?

9 to 11 AM provides the most balanced light with the eastern hillside illuminating the falls without harsh midday overhead shadows. Overcast days also produce excellent even lighting for waterfall photography.

Can visitors get close to the base of the falls?

Yes. From the viewing platform, a rocky trail leads to the base of Papa Falls. Water shoes are essential as the approach involves slippery boulders and a small stream crossing.

Is drone photography permitted?

Drone use within Morne Trois Pitons National Park is subject to Dominica's civil aviation regulations and national park rules. Visitors should check with the national park office in advance before flying any drone at the site.

Accessibility

The viewing platform is reachable via a short, relatively flat path from the car park and is accessible to most visitors. The boulder scramble to the base of Papa Falls is not suitable for wheelchair users or visitors with mobility limitations. The platform itself provides an excellent, unobstructed view of both falls.

When to visit

9 to 11 AM for the best natural light balance. Arrive before 9 AM or after 3 PM to avoid cruise ship groups. The falls are photogenic year-round but flow most powerfully after heavy rainfall.
