Piscilago, Ricaurte (Girardot)

Piscilago is a large tropical water park operated by the Colsubsidio family compensation fund at kilometre 105 of the Bogota-Girardot road in Ricaurte, Cundinamarca, about 105 km southwest of Bogota. It is the best-known warm-water destination within reach of the capital, and it serves as an artificial beach substitute: instead of sand and sea, visitors find pools, a wave pool, slides and a lake set in tropical gardens. Sitting at roughly 290 metres above sea level, the site enjoys air temperatures in the low thirties Celsius, which is exactly why residents of cool, high Bogota drive around three hours to reach it. Water in the pools is treated and clear, and the wave pool is the centrepiece, alongside children's lagoons, more than 100 metres of slides and lazy rivers for floating. A lake and an adjoining conservation park add a greener element. The character is unapologetically family-oriented, with a busy holiday-camp feel rather than a surf or party scene, and it is at its most crowded during school holidays and long weekends. Amenities are comprehensive: lockers, showers and changing rooms, restaurants and snack outlets, on-site lifeguards and first aid, a large car park and hotel accommodation for overnight stays, which lets families spread the trip over two days. Visitors should bring sun protection, swimwear, towels and water shoes, and check current ticket prices and any restrictions on outside food on the official website before travelling. Getting there is straightforward by road. Coaches to Girardot run from the Terminal Sur and Terminal Salitre in Bogota, costing roughly COP 30,000-40,000, and passengers alight at the park gate on the highway. By car, the route follows the Via Bogota-Girardot, with traffic often heavy on Friday evenings and Sunday afternoons. Starting early and returning outside peak hours makes the day far more comfortable.
