Termales El Zipa, Tabio

Termales El Zipa is a municipal thermal balneario in the Rio Frio valley of Tabio, Cundinamarca, about 45 km northwest of Bogota on the road between Tabio and Tenjo. It is the closest place to the capital where open-air bathing is genuinely comfortable, thanks to naturally warm mineral springs that feed the pools. There is no beach or sand here; the setting is landscaped gardens around a small lake, with the pools as the centrepiece. The main recreational pool is large and warm, a smaller medicinal pool holds mineral-rich water, and the complex also has a Turkish bath and a jacuzzi. Water is warm rather than hot, so visitors can stay in for long periods even when the air on the Sabana is cool, which is the site's main appeal at roughly 2,600 metres. The atmosphere is relaxed and family-oriented, with a spa rather than surf feel. Weekends are busy with Bogota families, and the pools can be crowded, while weekday mornings are typically near-empty and much better for a quiet soak. Amenities include changing rooms and lockers, picnic areas in the gardens, a snack bar, and parking. Visitors should bring a swimsuit, towel and flip-flops, and are generally expected to shower before entering the pools; hours and entry prices should be confirmed with the Tabio municipal tourism office before travelling, as they are set locally. Getting there is simple by car: the route follows the Autopista Norte to Chia and then the Tabio road, taking around 1 to 1.5 hours depending on traffic. By public transport, buses run from Portal del Norte to Chia, followed by a local Tabio bus and a short taxi, which takes 1.5 to 2 hours in total. The site is exposed to the cool valley climate, so a dry change of clothes and a warm layer are useful for leaving the water. It combines well with a wider day around Tabio and the nearby Sabana villages.
