Qiandao Lake Misty Islands

Qiandao Lake, or Thousand Island Lake, spreads across Chun'an County, Hangzhou, Zhejiang, a vast reservoir created by a mid-twentieth-century dam that submerged a valley, leaving over a thousand forested hilltops as islands. The strongest images use a telephoto lens from an elevated viewpoint, such as one of the hillside lookouts above the lake or Meifeng Island's summit, to stack the layered island silhouettes into a compressed pattern of gray-green ridgelines fading into haze. Early morning is essential, since the lake's large surface area and surrounding hills generate low mist that pools between the islands as temperatures rise after a cool night, an effect that is most reliable in autumn and winter when the temperature differential between the water and the air is greatest. Shooting from a slow boat on the water itself gives a lower, more intimate perspective of individual islands, though the wide lake surface makes a telephoto shot from height the more dependable option for the layered-mist effect specifically. The scenic area charges an entrance fee, and boat tours to the outer islands run on a schedule, so photographers wanting a boat vantage should confirm departure times in advance. Elevated lookout points are reached by a mix of paved paths and stairs; some require a short but sustained climb. Tripods are permitted at the lookout points; drone use is restricted within parts of the reservoir due to its role as a drinking-water source for the region.
