Leifeng Pagoda at Sunset and Blue Hour

Leifeng Pagoda stands on Sunset Hill at the southern edge of West Lake in Hangzhou, Zhejiang, a rebuilt five-story octagonal tower on the site of the original Song-dynasty pagoda made famous by the Legend of the White Snake. The best vantage points are along the lakeside path near Jingci Temple, looking north across the water toward the pagoda, or from a boat on the lake itself for a symmetrical reflection shot. Sunset backlights the pagoda's silhouette against the western sky, and as blue hour sets in over the following 20 to 30 minutes the tower's amber floodlighting switches on and reflects in the calm evening water, giving the strongest color contrast between the warm lit structure and the cooling blue sky. Clear autumn evenings, when humidity and haze are lowest, produce the sharpest reflections and the most saturated color transition. The site is popular with both tourists and evening photographers, so the best lakeside positions near the boat dock fill up 30 to 45 minutes before sunset; arriving early and using a low tripod position close to the water's edge secures an unobstructed reflection. There is an entrance fee to climb the pagoda itself, but the lakeside viewing points used for photography are on public paths with no fee. Tripods are permitted on the public shoreline; drone flight over the lake requires prior permission from the scenic area administration.
