Longjing Tea Terraces, Meijiawu Village

Meijiawu Tea Village lies in the hills of Xihu District, Hangzhou, Zhejiang, one of the villages producing the region's famous Longjing (Dragon Well) green tea, with terraced tea bushes climbing the valley slopes around the village itself. The strongest images use a telephoto lens from a raised roadside vantage to compress rows of tea bushes into a rippling pattern, or a wide-angle lens from within the terraces to include the valley and village rooftops in the background. Early morning light, low and side-lit across the contoured rows, brings out the texture of the bushes and, during the spring harvest, backlights the mist that often sits in the valley before the sun burns it off. The single best window is the spring tea-picking season from late March to mid-April, when local pickers in wide-brimmed hats work the rows by hand, adding scale and a human element that is otherwise absent outside harvest weeks. Outside this narrow window the terraces are still photogenic but without the activity. Meijiawu is a working agricultural village rather than a ticketed scenic area, so there is no entrance fee to walk the public lanes between fields, though photographers should stay on paths and avoid stepping into the tea rows themselves, which are private working farmland. The village is quieter than West Lake's central attractions but does see coach tours during peak harvest weekends; arriving on a weekday morning avoids most of that traffic.
