West Tianmu Mountain National Nature Reserve Trail

The West Tianmu Mountain National Nature Reserve Trail climbs toward the Xianrending summit in Tianmu Township, Lin'an District, roughly 2-2.5 hours from central Hangzhou by private car or taxi/DiDi via the Hangzhou-Huizhou Expressway; there is no direct public transit to the trailhead, and a nature reserve entry ticket is required at the gate, where paid parking is available. The route covers 8-10 km round trip depending on the path chosen, climbing to a summit of approximately 1,506 m (4,941 ft) with roughly 700-900 m (2,300-2,950 ft) of ascent, a significant elevation gain that typically takes 5-7 hours to complete. The trail surface varies from stone steps and boardwalk sections near the reserve entrance, protecting the reserve's ancient Cathaya (a rare conifer species) forest, to rougher dirt and rock paths higher up, with increasing exposure and thinning tree cover above the mid-elevation forest. The sustained ascent and changeable mountain weather make this a considerably more demanding hike than the trails closer to West Lake. Key landmarks include the ancient tree groves near the reserve entrance, several waterfalls along the lower approach, and the Xianrending ('Fairy Summit') peak itself, which offers sweeping views over the Tianmu range on clear days; most hikers treat the summit as the turn-around point, since routes beyond it require overnight planning. There are rest shelters and a visitor facility near the reserve entrance, but no staffed huts higher on the mountain, so hikers should carry sufficient water, food, and warm layers for the higher, cooler elevations. Given the altitude and distance from Hangzhou, an early start is essential, and trekking poles help manage the sustained climb and descent. Weather can shift quickly at altitude, with cloud cover, wind, and temperature drops possible even when the lowlands are warm, so hikers should be prepared to turn back if conditions deteriorate.
