Qiandao Lake Swimming Area

Qiandao Lake Swimming Area refers to a set of designated swimming coves along the shore of Qiandao Lake (Thousand Island Lake) in Chun'an County, roughly 150 km west of central Hangzhou. The lake is a large, man-made freshwater reservoir formed by the Xin'an River dam, and it is widely regarded as one of the cleanest bodies of freshwater in China, with notably clear, greenish-blue water that allows good visibility a few metres down. The swimming coves are sheltered inlets among the lake's thousand-plus islands rather than open, wind-exposed shoreline, so the water tends to stay calm with little chop, and shape varies by cove from narrow bays to wider curved beaches attached to lakeside resorts. The overall feel is a mix of family holiday and couples' getaway rather than a party scene, since most access is tied to lakeside resorts and guesthouses that offer private beach frontage alongside their rooms. Amenities depend on the specific cove: resort beaches typically provide sun loungers, changing facilities, and food service through the attached property, plus kayak and pedal-boat rental at select locations, while public access points are more basic. There is no lake-wide lifeguard system, so safety depends on the individual resort or the swimming zone in use. Reaching the lake from Hangzhou takes a direct tourist bus from Qiaosi Bus Station or Hangzhou West Bus Station, about 2 to 2.5 hours, or a private car covering the same route; many visitors combine swimming with a boat cruise or island-hopping tour, since the lake's main draw beyond the water is its scattering of forested islands.
