One Thousand Step Beach, Putuoshan

One Thousand Step Beach, known locally as Qianbu Beach, runs along the northeast coast of Putuoshan Island in the Zhoushan Archipelago off the coast of Zhejiang Province, well east of Hangzhou across the East China Sea. It is a genuine coastal sand beach rather than an artificial or lake-based one, stretching roughly 1,750 metres, which makes it the longest beach on the island and gives it a fairly open, gently curving shape facing the sea. The sand is fine and pale, and the water carries the greenish-brown tint typical of the East China Sea's coastal waters rather than the turquoise clarity of tropical beaches, with mild to moderate wave action depending on the tide and weather. Swimming is permitted only during the official season, roughly May through August, and only until 6pm, with a supervised zone marked out during those hours; outside the swimming window the beach remains open for walking. Given Putuoshan's status as a major Buddhist pilgrimage island, the crowd here is a mix of pilgrims and domestic tourists rather than a party scene, and the atmosphere is generally relaxed and family-friendly, especially in the early morning and evening. Amenities include beachfront guesthouses and seafood restaurants lining the shore, plus sun loungers and umbrella rental during the peak summer season; there are no facilities specifically built for wheelchair access noted for this stretch. Reaching the beach involves a direct bus from Hangzhou East Railway Station Bus Center to Zhoushan (Zhujiajian), about 3 to 4 hours, followed by a local bus or taxi to Zhujiajian's Wugongzhi Wharf and a 20-to-30-minute ferry crossing to Putuoshan itself, making it a trip best planned as an overnight stay rather than a single-day outing from Hangzhou.
