Qianbu Shatan (1000-Step Beach), Putuoshan

Qianbu Shatan, or 1000-Step Beach, is the longer and quieter counterpart to Baibu Shatan on Putuoshan Island in Zhejiang's Zhoushan Archipelago. As the name suggests, the descent to the sand involves considerably more steps than its 100-Step neighbour, and the beach itself is a longer, more open stretch of pale sand along the island's southeastern coast rather than a tightly enclosed cove. Because it faces more open water, it catches slightly more wind and swell than Baibu Shatan, though it remains far calmer than the exposed Pacific-facing beaches elsewhere in China. The vibe here is noticeably quieter and more contemplative, drawing fewer day-trip tour groups and more visitors seeking a peaceful stretch of coastline near a nearby temple and viewpoint. Sunbeds and umbrellas can be rented in the main section, and basic showers and toilets serve bathers, but amenities are sparser than at Baibu Shatan, with only a handful of small beachside food stalls rather than a developed promenade. The relative quiet and longer walk in keep crowds down even in peak season, making it a favoured spot for visitors who have already seen Putuoshan's busier sights. The beach lies about three kilometres from the island's main ferry pier, near the southeastern coast, reached by local shuttle bus or by a longer walk along the coastal path that takes in temple grounds and sea views along the way. As with the rest of Putuoshan, private vehicles are not permitted on the island, so all access is on foot or by the shuttle network from the pier.
