Nanshabeach (South Sand Beach), Zhujiajian

Nanshabeach, or South Sand Beach, lies on the southern shore of Zhujiajian Island in Zhoushan, Zhejiang, and is generally regarded as the archipelago's most attractive stretch of sand for swimming and overnight stays. The sand is fine and pale, and because the bay faces more open water than Dadeng Shala to the north, the surf here runs a little stronger, giving the beach a livelier, more open feel rather than a sheltered cove. Water clarity is better than at many mainland Zhejiang beaches, though it still reflects the sediment-rich East China Sea rather than tropical turquoise. The atmosphere blends family holidaymakers by day with a slightly more resort-style evening scene, since a strip of beachfront hotels and guesthouses backs directly onto the sand, letting guests walk straight from their rooms to the water. Sunbeds and umbrellas are available for rent along the main section, and restaurants and seafood barbecue stalls cluster near the hotel strip, serving grilled fish and shellfish through the evening. Showers and toilets serve the public areas, and in peak summer months the beach hosts sand-sculpture displays and organised beach-sport events that draw extra crowds on weekends. The beach sits roughly three kilometres south of Zhujiajian's main town, reached by local bus or taxi after crossing the Xiazhimen Bridge from Zhoushan Island. Because much of the shoreline is developed with hotels, the busiest central stretch fills quickly in July and August, while quieter pockets remain toward the eastern end of the bay. Typhoon season from July through September can bring stronger surf and periodic beach closures, so conditions are worth checking before travelling out from town.
