Yandang Mountain

Yandang Mountain rises in Yueqing, near Wenzhou in southern Zhejiang, a range of volcanic rock formations, sheer cliffs and waterfalls recognized as a UNESCO Global Geopark for rock strata dating back roughly 120 million years. The scenic area is split into several sections, the most visited being Lingfeng, Lingyan and the Dalongqiu waterfall zone. Lingfeng is known for peaks whose silhouettes resemble animals and human figures, an effect enhanced after dark by a light show that plays across the rock faces; Lingyan sits beneath towering cliffs and cave temples reached by stone stairways; Dalongqiu, or Big Dragon Waterfall, drops over 190 meters and is one of the tallest falls in China, though its flow depends heavily on recent rainfall. Trails link the three areas but distances and elevation gain mean a single day only allows a thorough visit to one or two zones; a two-day itinerary is the common way to see the main sights without rushing. Visitors typically start early to reach the waterfall or ridge viewpoints before midday heat and haze set in, and stay for the evening rock-formation lighting at Lingfeng if overnighting nearby. The mountain draws the heaviest crowds during Chinese national holidays and summer weekends, when the main stairways and waterfall viewing platforms become congested; weekday visits outside these periods are considerably quieter.
