Shipu Ancient Fishing Town

Shipu, on the coast of Xiangshan County in Ningbo, is a working fishing harbor built around a walled Ming-dynasty old town that was constructed to defend the coastline against pirate raids, and it remains an active fleet base rather than a preserved museum piece. Visitors walk through the old town's narrow stone lanes past the remaining sections of the Ming-era city wall and watchtowers, then continue down to the harbor front to see the day's catch unloaded at the dock and sold at an open-air seafood auction that runs most mornings when boats return. The harbor itself is lined with weathered wooden fishing vessels, net-repair stalls, and small seafood restaurants serving whatever came in that morning, giving the town a working-port atmosphere distinct from the restored water towns further inland in Zhejiang. A visit of two to three hours covers a walk through the old walled town, a stop at the harbor to watch the auction, and a seafood meal at one of the dockside restaurants. The auction is a morning activity tied to the fishing fleet's return schedule, so visitors aiming to see it should arrive before mid-morning; afternoons are quieter, with boats out at sea and the harbor front largely idle. Because Shipu remains a functioning fishing community, visitors should expect an authentic but unpolished setting rather than curated tourist infrastructure.
