Nanji Islands

The Nanji Islands, off Wenzhou's Dongtou District in Yueqing Bay, form a national marine nature reserve known for clearer water and richer coral and fish diversity than most of the Zhejiang coastline, owing to the mixing of warm and cold currents around the archipelago. Visitors reach the main island, Nanji Dao, by fast ferry from Wenzhou's Longwan Passenger Port and typically base themselves in the small fishing-village guesthouses clustered around the harbor, using the island as a base for snorkeling trips, coastal hiking along cliff-top paths, and visits to smaller outlying islets by local boat. The rocky coastline includes sea-carved formations and tide pools that are exposed at low tide, and the reserve's waters support seaweed farming that supplies much of the fresh seafood served in the village's small restaurants. Because ferry schedules depend on weather and sea conditions, a visit of one to two days is typical, allowing a buffer if a return sailing is delayed. Summer offers the calmest seas and clearest underwater visibility for snorkeling, though it also brings the most visitors; shoulder-season visits in late spring or early autumn are quieter while still offering reasonable conditions. The islands remain lightly developed compared with mainland coastal resorts, so visitors should expect a working fishing-village atmosphere rather than resort infrastructure.
