Yangliuqing Ancient Town & Shi Family Grand Courtyard

Yangliuqing Ancient Town sits in Xiqing District, about 15 km (9 miles) west of downtown Tianjin, and is one of the easiest day trips from the city given its short travel time of roughly 25-60 minutes depending on mode. A commuter train from Tianjin Railway Station reaches Yangliuqing in about 25 minutes, followed by a 1.1 km walk to the Shi Family Grand Courtyard at 47 Guyi Street; Bus 824 offers a slower but cheaper direct alternative. The town is famous nationwide for its centuries-old New Year woodblock print tradition (nianhua), and small workshops around the old streets still produce and sell the colorful prints. The main attraction, the Shi Family Grand Courtyard, is a sprawling Qing dynasty merchant residence with more than 200 rooms across multiple courtyards, showcasing traditional northern Chinese architecture, carved woodwork, and period furnishings. A half-day itinerary works well here: morning at the Shi Family Grand Courtyard exploring the courtyard complex, followed by an afternoon wandering the old town's canal-side streets, browsing woodblock print shops, and stopping at local tea houses. Street vendors near the old town sell Tianjin-style snacks such as jianbing and mahua (fried dough twists), making it easy to eat without needing a sit-down restaurant. Because the trip is short, it suits any season, though spring and autumn keep the walk between sights more comfortable than the summer heat.
