Dule Temple & Jizhou Ancient City

Dule Temple and the surrounding Jizhou Ancient City sit about 110 km (68 miles) north of downtown Tianjin, reached in roughly 2-2.5 hours each way by bus from Tianjin's Hebei Bus Station to Jizhou County town, followed by a short walk or taxi to the temple at 41 Wuding Street. Dule Temple is one of China's oldest surviving timber structures, with its main hall, the Guanyin Pavilion, dating to 984 CE during the Liao dynasty; the pavilion houses a roughly 16-meter clay statue of the eleven-headed Guanyin, one of the largest surviving clay Buddhist sculptures in the country. Beyond the temple itself, the surrounding Jizhou Ancient City retains fragments of its old city walls, gates, and a walkable historic street grid, making it easy to extend a temple visit into a broader look at the old county town. A comfortable day plan puts the temple visit in the morning, when the Guanyin Pavilion's interior light is best for viewing the statue and mural fragments, followed by an afternoon walk through the ancient city's remaining streets and gate towers. Small local restaurants and noodle shops around the county town serve straightforward Hebei-style dishes, and there is no need to bring food from Tianjin. The trip works comfortably in any season, with spring and autumn offering the most pleasant walking conditions between the temple and the old city sections.
