A roughly 1.28 sq km concession-era neighborhood containing more than 2,000 villas built between the 1920s and 1940s in British, French, Italian, Spanish and other European architectural styles. Former residents included Chinese warlords, diplomats and the last Qing emperor Puyi, who lived here in exile in the 1930s. The five tree-lined avenues (Chengde, Munan, Dali, Changde and Machang roads) are best explored slowly on foot.
Wudadao developed after 1919 as a residential extension of the British concession, and by the 1930s it had become the address of choice for former warlords, diplomats, bankers and exiled Qing royalty seeking a discreet, well-guarded neighborhood outside the busy treaty-port core. Puyi, deposed as China's last emperor in 1912, lived in the Zhang Garden and later the Jingyuan Villa within Wudadao between 1925 and 1931 before being installed as the puppet ruler of Manchukuo. Today the district mixes still-occupied private homes, government offices, several boutique hotels, and a handful of house-museums open to the public, alongside cafes and small shops that have moved into converted villas along Machang Road.
